Description

This 1970 Jaguar XKE is a Series 2 roadster that retains its original 4. 2-liter straight-six and was the subject of an older documented restoration. Series 2 cars retained the XK engines of earlier E-types but offered improved engine cooling, safety, and comfort features. The sale includes a Jaguar Heritage Trust certificate verifying matching engine and body numbers, as well as a Louisiana title. Extensive rust removal and metal replacement was performed in the floors, sills, rear wheel arches, lower quarters, trunk floor, driveshaft tunnel, and elsewhere during the 1992 work, and new panels were aligned to factory specifications. Originally Pale Primrose Yellow, the car received a full color change to red after the 1992 metalwork. Flaws include dings in the hood and trunk lid, blemishes beneath the rear bumper, and touched-up damage around the front opening. A small area of bubbling is detailed on an upper corner of the driverâ??s door. Both bumpers are free of common overrider bars and were replated during the 1990s work along with the chrome door caps. All other brightwork was replaced, with most still presenting well aside from a rumpled aluminum taillight panel. Knock-off 72-spoke wire wheels are showing their age and wear older 15â?³ Goodyears along with earless wheel nuts. Front marker lights were removed during metalwork, while the remaining factory lighting includes Series 2 open headlights along with under-bumper signals and taillights. Originally black, the interior was reupholstered in tan Connolly leather and wool carpets. Upholstery fit remains largely tight and bucket seats show signs of use but no apparent damage. A new black top was installed concurrently and is covered by a tan boot displaying some fit issues. The A/C the system is reportedly working well after a recent change of compressor oil and charging with R134a refrigerant. The factory wood-rimmed steering wheel sits atop a collapsible steering column in Series 2 cars and still shows well despite a lightly crazed horn button. Rocker switches replaced the toggles of earlier XKEs and all are accounted. Smiths instrumentation matches aside from a slightly differing fuel gauge, while the speedometer was recently fitted with a new cable. The five-digit odometer indicates 48k miles. This video includes tours of the exterior and interior along with demonstration of the engine starting and at idle. Driving footage is also included from inside and outside of the car. The original 4. 2L twin-cam straight-six produced 245 horsepower for the US market when new. The dual Stromberg carburetors were rebuilt during its last service in 2015. Machined and rebuilt as part of the 1992 work, the cylinder head wears appropriate ribbed aluminum cam covers. Series 2 cars received improved cooling in the form of a larger front opening and twin electric fans. The engine bay is generally presentable with occasional paint crazing and flaking. Engine number 7R-12147-9 can just be made out in the photo above and matches those stamped on the chassis tag and printed on the Heritage Trust certificate. An oil leak was recently repaired through installation of a new front crank seal and gaskets for the oil pan and timing cover. New timing chain guides and tensioners were also installed. Shifting is from a standard 4-speed manual transmission. Suspension, steering, rear end, and driveline components were disassembled, sandblasted, refurbished, and painted in 1992 before reassembly. Underbody photos show the general condition of the drivetrain, suspension, and floors. Additional photographs and invoices detail the 1990s work, which also included refreshment of the air conditioning, power steering pump, distributor, clutch, and most other systems.
